Ask Hiring Manager: Roger Collum

Roger Collum is the new Head of Studio Development of DICE Stockholm. Having spent over the past 13 years at Epic and made industry-changing achievements with Fortnite along with other successful titles, he moved to Stockholm at the beginning of this year (with his family and their super cute dog) to be part of the DICE studio leadership team.

He’ll be talking about his impression of DICE, his life in Stockholm, and a Senior Development Director (SDD) role that has been opened recently.

Q1. Welcome to DICE, Roger! Please tell us about your first 3 months at DICE.

My first three months at DICE have been amazing. Everyone I’ve met has been genuinely kind and welcoming. Collaborating with so many incredibly talented people has made it clear why the DICE DNA is world class.

You can imagine starting a new job right before a worldwide crisis is a once in a unique experience. EA and DICE have been so caring and supportive of everyone’s health and safety that it’s made me even prouder to be a part of the team here.

Q2. You’re from the US and moved to Europe to join DICE. How do you like Stockholm so far?

Everything I can see from my apartment window is gorgeous. Jokes aside, I love Stockholm. Though I aspire to speak fluent Swedish, navigating day to day in English makes the transition much easier. Quick access to public transport and a city full of fascinating history is really appealing, too. C’mon, Vikings!

Q3. DICE recently opened an SDD position. Please tell us about the role.

We’re looking for someone who cares about people, players, and process. We want someone that we can learn from as well as someone we can teach. Day to day an SDD will be managing multiple teams, other DDs, planning milestones, reporting progress and risk both on and off the team, being a force multiplier to everyone they work with, and helping to make sure we deliver the best possible game for our players.

Q4. For this SDD role, we’re looking for a project management expert. What is your definition of a great project manager?

A great project manager understands that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every team is a nuanced collection of people that have specific requirements and needs. A great project manager relies on their deep well of experience to identify challenges before they happen and seeks efficiencies everywhere. Most importantly, teams are made of people, not resources. We can’t ever forget that.

Q5. Lastly please tell us why a candidate should work at DICE.

I believe that the best of DICE is yet to come. DICE is a world class studio with a world class reputation of making the highest quality immersive experiences gamers have ever seen. Come be a part of gaming history!

Thank you Roger!
